Outcome
Construction began in January 2009 on the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), a joint building project of the governments of Canada and British Columbia, to improve traffic safety, travel and trade for families and businesses throughout Metro Vancouver. The SFPR project involves the construction of a new four-lane divided highway, approximately 40 kilometres in length, located on the south side of the Fraser River. The road will extend from northeast of the existing Highway 17/Deltaport Way intersection, through the municipalities of Delta and Surrey, and along the south bank of the Fraser River, with connections to Highways 1, 91 and 99 and the Golden Ears Bridge connector.
Background
The SFPR project has been part of provincial, regional and local plans for more than 20 years. The project was also a key element of the 1996 Livable Region Strategic Plan for planned transportation improvements. Determining the best possible alignment required carefully balancing the interests of agriculture, environmental values, existing development, community interests and road users.
