Outcome
In 2011, UBC announced it would maintain its membership in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) organization, and would not apply to join the U.S.-based National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II.
Background
UBC Athletics and Recreation first discussed the possibility of joining the NCAA in the 1990s during an internal review of the department. This review prompted the development of a Business Plan outlining NCAA membership as a future goal. In June 2008, the NCAA Division II voted to allow Canadian institutions to apply for membership. At the time, UBC Athletics and Recreation recommended that the University should move its competitive sport programs to the NCAA Division II, and a Review Committee was established to consider the implications of this move.
